Our research is organised around several interconnected themes spanning nanomedicine, redox biology and cardiovascular therapeutics, from the design of nitric oxide-releasing nanomaterials through to the platforms needed to test them.
Nitric oxide sits at the heart of vascular homeostasis, yet its therapeutic potential remains constrained by challenges in spatiotemporal delivery and targeted bioactivity. We engineer nanomaterials that release NO where and when it is needed, restoring endothelial function and promoting vascular healing.
We develop redox-responsive nanodrug excipients capable of navigating the biochemical gradients of the cardiovascular system, using pH-selective permeabilities to guide cargo to subcellular targets in cardiovascular disease.
Advanced synthetic platforms for imaging NO at subcellular resolution, illuminating how NO fluxes relate to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and endothelial pathology in living cells.
One of our flagship efforts involves the design and fabrication of cardiovascular implants for controlled, sustained and stimulus-responsive therapeutic action, including NO-generating coatings for vascular stents and grafts.
An ex vivo perfusion platform for testing cardiovascular interventional devices under physiologically realistic flow, bridging the gap between bench materials characterisation and pre-clinical evaluation.
Our research is supported by competitive funding from UK and international funders, with more than £2M secured to date.
Our work is pursued in close collaboration with engineers, chemists, pharmacists and clinicians, bridging the gap between fundamental redox biology and translational cardiovascular therapeutics. We work with partner groups across the UK, Europe, North America and Australia.
